Free Image Compressor & WebP Converter

Heavy images are the number one reason websites are slow. Drop your photos here to compress them and convert JPG or PNG to modern WebP or AVIF – usually 50–90% smaller with no visible loss. Everything happens inside your browser: your images are never uploaded, and you can download them one by one or all together as a ZIP.

80%
75–82% is the sweet spot for websites

100% private: images are compressed by your browser and never uploaded.

Why use this compressor

Faster pages

Smaller images mean a faster Largest Contentful Paint (LCP) and a better Google PageSpeed score.

WebP & AVIF

Modern formats supported by all current browsers – typically 25–35% smaller than JPEG at the same quality.

Resize

Phone photos are often 4000 px wide; most websites need 1200–1920 px. Resize while you compress.

Batch & ZIP

Convert up to 50 images at once and download them all in one ZIP file.

Private

No upload, no server, no account – the images never leave your device.

Unlimited & free

No watermark, no daily limit, no sign-up.

Quick answer

To make images smaller for a website, resize them to the size they are displayed at (usually 1200–1920 px wide) and save them as WebP at about 75–82% quality. That typically cuts the file size by 50–90% with no visible difference. This free tool does both in your browser, in batches, without uploading your images.

How to use it

  1. Drop your images on the box (or click to choose them).
  2. Pick the output format (WebP is best for websites), the quality and the maximum width.
  3. Download each image or press Download all (ZIP), then upload the new files to your website.

Why image size matters for SEO

Images are usually the heaviest part of a web page. A single 4 MB hero photo can add several seconds on a mobile connection and push your Largest Contentful Paint – one of Google’s Core Web Vitals – into the red. Compressing and converting images is the quickest speed win on almost every website I optimise.

WebP vs AVIF vs JPEG vs PNG

FormatBest forNotes
WebPAlmost everything on websitesSupported by all modern browsers, supports transparency, great balance of size and speed.
AVIFLarge photos, hero bannersOften the smallest files; encoding needs a recent browser (Chrome, Edge, Firefox).
JPEGE-mail, old systemsUniversal, but larger than WebP at the same quality; no transparency.
PNGLogos, screenshots with textLossless and sharp, but big for photos – convert photos to WebP instead.

Recommended sizes

  • Full-width hero / slider: 1920 px wide, WebP 75–80%.
  • Blog featured image: 1200 px wide (1200×675 or 1200×630 for social sharing).
  • Product photos: 1000–1200 px square, WebP 80%.
  • Thumbnails and cards: 400–640 px.

WordPress tip: upload images already resized and in WebP, and keep a caching/optimisation plugin for lazy loading and responsive sizes. For a complete PageSpeed 90+ job – images, caching, scripts and server – see my speed optimization service and the WordPress speed guide.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert JPG or PNG to WebP for free?

Drop your images in this tool, choose WebP and press download. The conversion happens in your browser, so it is free, fast and private, and you can convert up to 50 images at once.

Are my images uploaded to a server?

No. The images are decoded, resized and compressed by your own browser. Nothing is uploaded, which also means it works with private or confidential photos.

What quality should I use for website images?

For photos, 75–82% WebP quality is usually indistinguishable from the original and much smaller. Use higher quality (90%+) or PNG for logos and images with small text.

Is WebP supported by all browsers?

Yes. WebP is supported by Chrome, Safari (since iOS 14 / macOS Big Sur), Firefox, Edge and Samsung Internet – practically all visitors in 2026.

Why can’t I choose AVIF on my device?

Creating AVIF needs a recent browser such as Chrome, Edge or Firefox. If your browser can’t encode AVIF, the tool automatically falls back to WebP and tells you.
