SEO in Egypt: How to Rank on Google The Complete 2026 Guide

Quick answer
To rank on Google in Egypt in 2026, you need four things working together: a fast, mobile-friendly site that Google can crawl and index, pages built around the real Arabic (often Egyptian dialect) phrases your customers type, a complete Google Business Profile with genuine reviews for local searches, and trustworthy content that other sites link to. There are no shortcuts: Google states it does not accept payment to rank pages higher, and the same SEO fundamentals are what make a page eligible to appear in AI Overviews.
Most Egyptian businesses I talk to have the same goal: when a customer in Cairo, Alexandria or Mansoura searches for what they sell, they want to appear on the first page of Google. That is what SEO (search engine optimization) is about, and in Egypt it has a few local twists: Arabic and dialect search queries, a very mobile-first audience, Google Maps results for almost every service, and now AI answers that sit above the classic blue links.
This guide is the process I follow when I build or audit a site. It covers how Google works, Arabic keyword research, on-page and technical SEO, content, local SEO, safe link building, AI search, measurement and timelines, and ends with a free checklist you can apply today.
How Google search works (and why SEO in Egypt matters)
Google's own documentation describes three stages. First, crawling: Googlebot discovers pages and downloads them, including rendering JavaScript. Second, indexing: Google analyses the text, titles, images and videos and stores the page in its index, choosing one "canonical" version when several pages are duplicates. Third, serving: when someone searches, Google returns the pages it judges most relevant and useful, taking into account things like the searcher's location, language and device.
Two statements from Google are worth remembering before you hire anyone for SEO services in Egypt: Google does not accept payment to crawl a site more often or rank it higher, and it does not guarantee that any page will be crawled, indexed or served. Anyone promising "guaranteed first position" is guessing or breaking the rules.
The audience is there: DataReportal's Digital 2026 Egypt report puts Egypt at about 98.2 million internet users at the end of 2025, roughly 82.7% of the population. Most of them search on a phone, which is why everything below is mobile-first.
Arabic keyword research: dialect vs Modern Standard Arabic
This is where most Egyptian sites lose before they start. Business owners write their pages in polished formal Arabic, while customers type the way they speak. Someone looking for a web developer may search "عمل موقع" or "تصميم مواقع" rather than "إنشاء موقع إلكتروني"; someone checking a price types "بكام" or "سعر" next to the product name. Some even search in Franco-Arabic (Arabic written in Latin letters) or in English.
| Formal (MSA) phrasing | Common Egyptian search phrasing | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| إنشاء موقع إلكتروني | عمل موقع / تصميم مواقع | Use the dialect phrase in the title and H1, the formal one in the body |
| ما سعر…؟ | … بكام / سعر … في مصر | Add a clear price or price-range section |
| طبيب أسنان | دكتور أسنان + area name | Create location pages and optimise Google Business Profile |
| هاتف محمول | موبايل | Use the word customers actually use in product names |
Free and paid tools that work for Arabic
- Google Search Console: the Performance report shows the exact queries that already bring you impressions. It is the most honest keyword tool you have.
- Google autocomplete and "People also ask": type your main term in Arabic on a phone set to Egypt and note every suggestion.
- Google Trends: compare spellings and dialect vs formal terms, filtered to Egypt.
- Google Keyword Planner: free inside a Google Ads account; gives volume ranges by country.
- Paid tools (Semrush, Ahrefs): useful for competitor research, although Arabic volume data is less precise than for English.
Tip: group keywords by search intent, not by spelling. "سعر تصميم موقع" and "تكلفة عمل موقع" are one page, not two. Writing a separate thin page for every variation is exactly what Google's spam policies call manipulative.
On-page SEO: titles, headings and content structure
On-page SEO is making each page clearly answer one topic for both people and Google. Google's SEO Starter Guide recommends titles that are unique, clear and descriptive, and meta descriptions that are short, unique and summarise the page. It also notes that Google does not use the meta keywords tag and that there is no magic word count.
- Title tag: main keyword near the start, under about 60 characters, plus your brand.
- One H1 that matches the search intent, then H2/H3 sections a reader can scan.
- Answer first: put the direct answer in the first paragraph, then go deeper. This helps featured snippets and AI answers alike.
- Readable URLs: short and descriptive. Arabic URLs work in Google but appear percent-encoded when shared, so many sites use short English slugs.
- Internal links with descriptive anchor text from related pages.
- Image alt text that describes the image, and compressed WebP images (my free WebP image compressor does this in the browser).
- Bilingual sites: separate URLs for Arabic and English with correct
hreflangand RTL layout, never automatic machine translation on the same URL.
Technical SEO: speed, mobile, indexing and Search Console
Technical SEO makes sure Google can reach, render and trust your pages. This is where I see the biggest problems in Egyptian sites: heavy themes, uncompressed images and cheap hosting that fail on a mid-range Android phone over mobile data.
Core Web Vitals
Google recommends that site owners achieve good Core Web Vitals and says this aligns with what its core ranking systems seek to reward. The "good" thresholds are: LCP (loading) within 2.5 seconds, INP (responsiveness) under 200 milliseconds and CLS (visual stability) below 0.1. Speed alone will not rank weak content, but a slow site loses both rankings and customers. My own site scores 100 on desktop and 97–100 on mobile in PageSpeed, and I explain the exact method in the WordPress speed optimization guide.
Indexing essentials
- Verify the site in Google Search Console. Use a domain property so http, https, www and non-www are all covered.
- Submit an XML sitemap. WordPress SEO plugins generate one at a URL such as
/sitemap_index.xml. - Check robots.txt. Make sure you are not blocking CSS, JavaScript or important sections by mistake.
- Fix canonical and duplicate issues. Filters, tags and tracking parameters can create thousands of near-duplicate URLs, especially in WooCommerce stores.
- Use HTTPS everywhere and redirect old URLs with 301 redirects when you redesign.
- Inspect key pages with the URL Inspection tool and request indexing after major updates.

Arabic content strategy that earns rankings
Good Arabic content is still rare on the Egyptian web, which is a real opportunity. The pages that rank and get quoted answer a specific question better than anyone else.
- Service and product pages first: each core service gets its own detailed page with prices or price ranges, process, FAQs and proof of work.
- Answer real questions: turn every question customers send on WhatsApp into a page or FAQ entry.
- Show experience: real photos, case studies and the name of the person behind the advice. For example, my HardSat case study shows a store with real products, not stock text.
- Update instead of duplicating: refresh last year's article with new data rather than publishing a near-copy.
- Use AI carefully: AI can help with outlines and editing, but Google lists using generative AI "to generate many pages without adding value for users" as scaled content abuse.
Local SEO in Egypt: Google Business Profile, reviews and links
For clinics, restaurants, showrooms, schools, workshops and any service with an address or service area, local SEO is the fastest win. Google says local results are based mainly on relevance, distance and prominence, and that there is no way to pay for a better local ranking.
- Claim and verify your Google Business Profile. Verified profiles are more likely to appear.
- Complete every field: exact category, address or service area, phone, WhatsApp, website, hours and special holiday hours (Ramadan and Eid hours matter in Egypt).
- Add real photos and videos of your place, team and work, and keep adding them.
- Ask every happy customer for a review with a short link or QR code, and reply to every review, positive or negative. Google says more reviews and positive ratings can help local ranking.
- Keep your name, address and phone identical on your website, Facebook page and directories.
- Create area pages on your site only where you truly serve, for example a branch in Nasr City and one in Sheikh Zayed.
Warning: never buy fake reviews or ask staff to post them. Besides breaking Google's policies, Egyptian customers spot them quickly, and review removal can wipe out months of work.
Link building safely
Links from other trustworthy sites are still one of the signals of prominence. But Google's spam policies explicitly list buying or selling links that pass ranking credit, excessive link exchanges and automated link building as link spam. Sponsored links are fine only when marked with rel="sponsored" or rel="nofollow".
- Get listed in genuine Egyptian business directories, chambers and industry associations.
- Earn mentions from suppliers, partners and clients you actually work with.
- Publish useful data, guides or free tools that people want to reference.
- Offer expert comments to Egyptian news and industry sites.
- Avoid "1,000 backlinks for EGP 500" offers. They are the fastest way to a penalty.
AI search: AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Gemini and GEO
More searches now end with an AI-generated answer. Optimising to be cited by those answers is often called GEO (generative engine optimization). Google's guidance is clear: there are no additional requirements or special optimisations to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode. A page must be indexed and eligible to show with a snippet, and traffic from these features is counted in Search Console's Performance report under the "Web" search type.
In practice, what helps both Google and assistants like ChatGPT and Gemini be confident enough to quote you is:
- Clear, quotable answers near the top of each page, with facts, numbers and dates.
- Structured data (schema) such as Organization, LocalBusiness, Product, FAQPage and Article, matching what is visible on the page. Google says no special schema is needed for AI features, but structured data still helps machines understand your business.
- A consistent brand footprint: the same name, services and contact details on your site, Google Business Profile and social pages.
- llms.txt: a proposed (not yet official) Markdown file at your domain root that summarises your site and key pages for AI tools. It costs nothing and does no harm, but treat it as an extra, not a ranking factor.
You can test how AI assistants see your brand with my free AI visibility checker, and create both files with the llms.txt and schema generator.
Measuring results and realistic timelines
Track SEO with data, not feelings. Google's SEO Starter Guide notes that some changes show within hours while others take several months, and suggests waiting a few weeks before judging a change.
| Timeframe | What you usually see | What to measure |
|---|---|---|
| Weeks 1–4 | Pages indexed, technical errors fixed, Business Profile live | Indexed pages, Core Web Vitals report, profile views |
| Months 2–3 | Impressions grow for long-tail Arabic queries, first local calls | Search Console impressions, average position, calls and direction requests |
| Months 4–6 | Clicks to service pages, rankings for more competitive terms | Clicks, conversions in Google Analytics, WhatsApp leads |
| 6–12 months | Stable traffic, links earned, AI citations for your topics | Leads and sales from organic search, branded searches |
These are typical patterns from the sites I work on, not guarantees. Competition, site age and how consistently you publish change the pace.
Common SEO mistakes in Egypt
- Writing only in formal Arabic and ignoring how customers really search.
- One page that lists every service, instead of one strong page per service.
- Slow, builder-heavy sites on weak shared hosting.
- No Google Business Profile, or one with wrong hours and no reviews.
- Buying backlinks or fake reviews.
- Redesigning the site without 301 redirects and losing years of rankings overnight.

Key takeaways
- Search engine optimization in Egypt starts with Arabic keyword research: Egyptians often search in dialect ("عمل موقع", "بكام") rather than formal Arabic, so check both before writing a page.
- Technical basics come first: HTTPS, mobile-friendly design, a sitemap submitted in Google Search Console, and Core Web Vitals within Google's "good" thresholds (LCP under 2.5 s, INP under 200 ms, CLS below 0.1).
- For local SEO in Egypt, a verified, complete Google Business Profile plus a steady flow of real reviews is often worth more than any blog post.
- Google says there are no extra requirements for AI Overviews or AI Mode: an indexed, snippet-eligible, genuinely useful page is the foundation; llms.txt and schema are optional extras.
- Expect results in months, not days, and avoid bought links and mass AI-generated pages, which Google's spam policies explicitly target.
Frequently asked questions
How long does SEO take to work in Egypt?
Technical fixes and Google Business Profile changes can show results within weeks, but rankings for competitive Arabic keywords usually take several months. Google itself says some changes take effect in hours and others in months, so judge progress over 3 to 6 months using Search Console data.
Should I target Egyptian dialect or Modern Standard Arabic keywords?
Both. Check Search Console, Google autocomplete and Google Trends to see which phrasing people actually use. Often the dialect phrase, such as "عمل موقع" or "بكام", belongs in the title and H1, while formal Arabic reads naturally in the body text.
Can I pay Google to rank higher?
No. Google states that it does not accept payment to crawl a site more often or to rank it higher, and there is no way to pay for a better local ranking. Paid Google Ads appear separately and are labelled as sponsored.
What is local SEO in Egypt?
Local SEO is optimising your business to appear in Google Maps and local results for searches such as a service plus an area name. It relies mainly on a verified and complete Google Business Profile, genuine reviews, consistent contact details and relevant pages on your website.
How do I get my business cited by ChatGPT, Gemini or Google AI Overviews?
Start with solid SEO: indexed, fast pages with clear, factual answers. Add structured data that matches your visible content, keep your brand details consistent across the web, and optionally publish an llms.txt file. Google says no special optimisation is needed for AI Overviews beyond normal SEO best practices.
